Frequently asked questions.

How can I find out if Chiropractic can help me?
The best and easiest way is to book an appointment for a ‘CHIRO CHECK’. This consists of a full Chiropractic examination (although it does not include treatment) at no cost to you. It will enable you to find out if indeed Chiropractic care could be beneficial for you, taking into consideration your personal circumstances.

Is the Chiropractic profession regulated?
The profession has statutory regulation through the General Chiropractic Council (GCC, www.gcc-uk.org ); it is illegal to practice as a Chiropractor without being registered with the GCC. The GCC has introduced a mandatory requirement for Chiropractors to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) as a condition for re-registration on an annual basis.

What is the British Chiropractic Association?
The British Chiropractic Association (BCA, www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk ) is the largest and longest standing association for Chiropractors in the UK, requiring education to international standards and the highest level of training and conduct from its members.

Do I need a G.P. referral?
No, Chiropractic is a primary health care profession and you can decide for yourself to make an appointment. Most G.P.’s are happy to endorse Chiropractic care and will assist in referring to a registered Chiropractor for insurance purposes.

Is the referring G.P. liable for the Chiropractic care?
No, and unfortunately this is still a large misconception amongst the G.P.’s. As long as the Chiropractor is registered with the GCC and the G.P. is satisfied that the patient will benefit from Chiropractic care, the full responsibility of care lies with the Chiropractor.

Will my health insurance cover Chiropractic treatment?
Obviously, it will depend on the details of your policy. However, most of the larger and better known health insurance companies will cover our services. Our advice would be to always give them a ring for confirmation.

Is there scientific proof that Chiropractic works?
Numerous studies throughout the world have shown that Chiropractic treatment, including manipulative therapy and spinal adjustment, is both safe and effective.
The GCC(www.gcc-uk.org) and the BCA(www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk) will have relevant information about the recent research.

What is the Activator Treatment?
This is a treatment form where the manipulation is carried out by a specific instrument, called the Activator. It is known to be a gentle, low force technique with the aim to free up the stiff joint. Some chiropractors will use a specific Activator analysis, others will combine it with hands-on manipulation.

What is the difference between Chiropractic and Osteopathy?
There are both similarities and differences within their individual techniques and approaches to spinal care. The important aspect is that both professions have statutory regulations and play an important role in treating simple mechanical spinal pain.
